Major Requirements

The major in Africana Studies requires the satisfactory completion of 11 courses (3 credits each) in the Department, with a grade of “C” or better. These 11 courses are comprised of 4 required courses and 7 elective courses. At least 6 of the courses credited towards the major must be at the 300 or 400 level. Students are encouraged to take courses offered by other departments pertaining to their area of concentration or interest. Two of those courses may be applied toward the major. Study abroad is strongly recommended for Africana studies majors. The department offers assistance in long-term curriculum planning and in securing financial aid. Students participating in one- or two-semester study abroad programs in countries of the African diaspora-- Brazil, Costa Rica, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Namibia, and South Africa--can receive course credit (in consultation with the chair) toward the Africana Studies major or minor.
