Join us for a mini book manuscript workshop and a kick-off for the upcoming seminar series at the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis: “Black Power and White Supremacy: The Cyclical Dialectics of Power,” beginning in Fall 2024 and co-directed by Leslie M. Alexander and Kim D. Butler.
Kim Butler’s manuscript in progress explores how we might re-envision the diversity of the African diaspora, that has so long vexed its politics, as the foundation for a new approach to solidarity. Critical to the project is a deep dive into Blackness itself as it was formed alongside capitalism and slavery, and both challenged and redefined by those it identified.
What does it mean to work in solidarity given the vast diversity of Black experience?
What is the relationship between the imposed Blackness of slavery and the identities people have
shaped for themselves?
How does the Black Radical Tradition engage all modes of Black liberation?
Is African diaspora community anchored primarily by resistance?
What is Blackness? You are invited to be part of a conversation with fellow scholars of global Black experience to help think through these and other questions. It will not be necessary to read the entire manuscript, but those who rsvp can request a short excerpt with the central ideas of the chapter being workshopped.
