The Africana Studies Scholars Project (HONORS PROGRAM)

The Scholars Project is an honors program that provides outstanding students an opportunity to pursue long-term independent research in Africana Studies. It is a two-term, 12-credit course for majors in the field who meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Must have completed junior year
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or over
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.4 or over in Africana Studies
  • Must have completed the following core courses:
    • Intro to Africana Studies

Each participant in the Scholars Project selects a faculty member from the Department of Africana Studies to serve as their principal advisor, and a second reader from the University-wide faculty, as approved by the department. Together, students and their advisors schedule meetings for the year ahead to discuss the student’s progress. All participating students must produce a research prospectus and successfully present an oral defense at the end of the year.  The final thesis must be filed with the department chair.
